Far-right bids to seize power as parliamentary elections take place in France

France will hold parliamentary elections on Sunday that will change the political landscape. According to opinion polls, the far-right Rassemblement National (RN) party will win the most votes, but is unlikely to achieve a majority.

Such an outcome could plunge the country into a chaotic hung parliament, severely damaging President Emmanuel Macronโ€™s authority. And if the nationalist, Eurosceptic RN were to win a majority, the pro-business, pro-European president could find himself forced into a difficult โ€œcohabitation.โ€

Marine Le Pen’s RN won a historic victory on Sunday by winning the first round of voting, raising the specter of France’s first far-right government since World War II.
