French President Emmanuel Macron convened a meeting of his defense and security council on Monday to discuss deadly unrest in the Pacific region of New Caledonia.
It is the third such meeting in less than a week, with the previous two first resulting in the decision to declare a state of emergency on French territory and then send reinforcements to help government forces on the ground restore order.
On Friday, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal met with parliamentary party leaders to discuss the crisis, in particular whether or not the state of emergency should be extended beyond the first 12 days.
