A giant moon cake measuring about one meter in diameter and weighing about 60 kilograms is on display at the Rose Hotel Yokohama in Yokohama, in celebration of China’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

One of the three great traditional festivals in China, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time when families come together to enjoy each other’s company. Eating mooncakes under the full moon is said to bring good luck.

The festival coincides with Japan’s Fifteenth Night, or Jugoya.

The mooncake exhibition at the Yokohama hotel began in 1994, making it the 31st time this year. The mooncake was handmade by artisans at the long-standing Chungking Chinese Szechwan Restaurant in Yokohama’s Chinatown.

“There is a custom to exchange or share mooncakes with family during the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Why not enjoy it with your loved ones instead of just buying a regular souvenir from Chinatown?” said a hotel representative.

The exhibition runs until September 17.
