High school baseball gets a makeover now that buzz cut rules are no longer in place

Buzz cuts, vigorous training and occasional corporal punishment by coaches were once seen as symbols of the fighting spirit of Japanese high school baseball. But now such scenes are gradually becoming a thing of the past.

An increasing number of players have a hairstyle of their choice, including long hair. Many coaches also pay more attention to the feelings of the players and their parents, looking for a positive way to communicate with them. Schools in Hiroshima Prefecture are no exception to this trend.

Kaita High School’s baseball team finished second in this year’s prefecture spring tournament – a turning point for the team as it reached the finals for the first time.
