Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday, state media reported. The European leader called the visit a “peace mission 3.0,” following recent visits to Moscow and Kiev.
The unannounced visit comes a day before NATO holds a summit to mark its 75th anniversary. Setbacks in Ukraine are set to dominate discussions. The visit follows Orban’s surprise visits to Russia and Ukraine in the past week.
Orban, the EU leader most friendly to Moscow, held talks with President Vladimir Putin on Friday over the war in Ukraine, during a trip criticized by both Kiev and the EU, which said the war would undermine the bloc’s position on the conflict.
