Indian Prime Minister Modi may visit Japan this year

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, agreed Friday to work toward setting up Modi’s visit to Japan within the year.

Modi’s possible visit would be part of the two countries’ program of alternating visits between their leaders.

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Puglia, southern Italy. India, which is not a member of the G7, was invited as a guest to the summit. The G7 consists of Great Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, plus the European Union.

The meeting between Kishida and Modi was the first since the victory of the Modi-led ruling bloc in the Indian general election. The outcome of the poll was announced earlier this month.

Noting that this year marks the 10th anniversary of Japan and India upgrading their relations to a special strategic global partnership, Kishida said he hopes to deepen and diversify bilateral ties.
