Yokohama F Marinos have sacked manager Harry Kewell after less than seven months in the role, the Japanese club announced on Tuesday.

The former Liverpool winger’s departure comes less than two months after Yokohama lost the Asian Champions League final to Al Ain.

The 45-year-old, who had limited managerial experience before taking over, was appointed in late December to replace Kevin Muscat and became the third Australian in succession to hold the role.

Predecessors Ange Postecoglou and Muscat led Marinos to the J.League title in 2019 and 2022, but the club’s form under Kewell has been inconsistent and they currently lie twelfth, twenty points behind leaders Machida Zelvia.

Their 4-1 win over Kashima Antlers on Sunday followed four straight league defeats.

Kewell will be replaced on an interim basis by John Hutchinson, who has been the club’s head coach since the turn of the year.
