J-Power could close five coal-fired power plants by the 2030 financial year

Japan’s Electric Power Development (J-Power) said on Thursday it may close five low-efficiency coal-fired power generation units by the 2030 financial year ending March 2031, as part of its efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The company’s goal is to reduce emissions by 46% from 2013 levels by 2030, in line with Japan’s national target.

โ€œWe felt it necessary to demonstrate our coal-fired power strategy on a site-by-location or unit-by-unit basis to shareholders,โ€ President Hitoshi Kanno said at a news conference, noting that some institutional investors have expressed concerns about coal. power plants become stranded assets.
