Japan appoints Naomi Unemoto as first female attorney general

The government decided on Friday to appoint Naomi Unemoto, head of the Tokyo High Prosecutor’s Office, as attorney general, making her the first woman to take up the post.

The appointment, which takes effect on July 9, will see Unemoto, 61, succeed current Prosecutor General Yukio Kai, who is retiring.

Unemoto, who became a prosecutor in 1988, worked at the Supreme Public Prosecutor’s Office and took over as chief prosecutor at the Hiroshima High Prosecutor’s Office before becoming chief prosecutor at the Tokyo office in January 2023.

The top position at the Tokyo office will go to Deputy Attorney General Takahiro Saito, 61 years old.
