Japan conducts first national survey on religious abuse

TOKYO, April 26 (News On Japan) – For the first time, Japan has conducted a national survey of child abuse related to religious beliefs, revealing 47 cases reported at child consultation centers in the past 18 months. The findings highlight significant concerns within households where extreme religious beliefs hinder children’s well-being.

The study, which covered children’s counseling centers, schools and individuals who reported experiencing religious abuse, found that in almost 40% of cases, temporary protective custody was needed for the children involved. Reported abuses include threatening or coercive behavior to force participation in religious activities, and in some cases preventing necessary medical treatments such as blood transfusions due to religious beliefs.

In one harrowing account, a child died after his parents, who adhered to the teachings of their faith, refused a life-saving blood transfusion. This case has led to a broader discussion about the intersection of religious freedom and child welfare.

Response from the government and the public

Following the investigation, the government reaffirmed guidelines issued two years ago classifying denial of critical medical treatment and forced religious attendance as forms of abuse. However, the survey also found that awareness and understanding of these guidelines is low, even among medical and educational professionals.

A spokesperson for the newly established Children and Families Agency emphasized the need for the same assertive interventions used in other forms of abuse, saying hesitation can no longer be justified when children’s lives and wellbeing are at stake.

This research marks a crucial step toward addressing the delicate balance between respecting religious freedom and protecting children from harm. It opens a conversation about the need to train and equip public institutions to better recognize and respond to cases of religious abuse.
