The Japanese men’s rugby sevens team lost 5-49 to South Africa, ending their chance of a medal at the Paris Olympics after three consecutive defeats.

Japan lost their first two matches in Pool A against New Zealand (40-12) and Ireland (40-5) on Wednesday.

A win against South Africa in the final group match was the minimum requirement for Japan to continue the fight for a podium finish.
