Japan Post will increase stamp prices

TOKYOJune 13 (News On Japan) – Japan Post has announced its first price increase in almost 30 years, effective this fall, and unveiled new stamps and postcards.

The cost of postcards will rise from the current 63 yen to 85 yen each, while standard letters weighing up to 25 grams will rise from 84 yen to 110 yen.

Excluding adjustments for consumption tax increases, this sizeable increase in postal rates is the first since 1994.

The decline in mail volume, caused by the advancement of digital communications, is a key factor behind this decision.

Japan Post’s mail business faces continued financial challenges, with rising transportation costs leading to the first post-privatization deficit in fiscal year 2022.

From October 1, the new rates will apply to shipments brought to the post office counters. However, mail placed in mailboxes will be delivered at current rates if collected during the first collection on October 1.
