TOKYO (Jiji Press) – Japan has strongly protested a comment by China’s ambassador to the country about Tokyo’s possible involvement in the situation in Taiwan, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said on Wednesday.

Ambassador Wu Jianghao’s comment that the Japanese people will be dragged into the flames if Japan becomes involved in an attempt to divide China was deeply inappropriate, Hayashi told a news conference.

“We expect a peaceful solution through dialogue” regarding the Taiwan issue, Hayashi said, adding that Japan will take every opportunity to strongly urge the Chinese side to handle the situation in such a way.

Wu made the comment Monday as he argued that the presence of Japanese lawmakers at the inauguration ceremony of new Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te sends a deeply wrong political signal.
