Japan Swashbuckles to silver in men’s epee team fencing; badminton mixed doubles team wins bronze

PARIS — Japan won a silver medal in the men’s epee team fencing event at the Paris Olympics on Friday, making it two consecutive Games to the country’s medal haul after winning gold at the 2021 Tokyo Games.

The team of Koki Kano, Kazuyasu Minobe, Masaru Yamada and Akira Komata lost in the final 26-25 to Hungary, in overtime. This was the third Paris medal for Japan in fencing, after Kano’s gold in the men’s individual épée and a bronze in the women’s foil team.

The mixed doubles badminton team of Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino won their second consecutive bronze medal by beating the South Korean team 2-0.

In judo, Tatsuru Saito missed out on a medal in the men’s over 100 kilogram category after losing both the semi-final and the bronze medal match.

The Japanese men’s soccer team lost 3-0 to Spain in the quarterfinals. The men’s volleyball team qualified for the quarterfinals despite losing 3-1 to the United States.
