The Japanese women’s soccer team, ranked seventh in the world, was defeated 1-0 in the quarterfinals on Saturday by the number five USA, which meant the team failed to reach the semifinals of the Olympic Games in Paris.
The Japanese team, dubbed Nadeshiko Japan, battled through the 90 minutes with a 0-0 score, but conceded a goal in extra time. Nadeshiko have failed to advance beyond the quarter-finals at both the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, and last year’s World Cup.
