MANILA (Jiji Press) โ€” Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki has been selected as the winner of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Award, also known as the Nobel Prize of Asia, the foundation for the award announced Saturday.

The Manila-based Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation also selected three other individuals and one group as winners of the 2024 award.

Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, produced many anime works that tackled difficult themes such as environmental protection and peace and made them understandable for children, the foundation said.

The awards ceremony will take place in Manila in November.

The award is given to individuals and groups who have made a major contribution to Asia. The award was established in honor of former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, who was known for his clean political conduct and died in a plane crash in 1957.
