Japanese civil servants may get biggest pay rise in 32 years

From teachers to maritime workers, Japanese civil servants are likely to see their biggest pay rise in more than three decades, a development expected to boost a recovery in consumer demand.

The National Personnel Authority on Thursday recommended a 2.76% increase in the average monthly basic salary for civil servants in the current budget year, the largest increase since 1992. Under the proposal, total wages should rise by about 4.4%.

The human resources authority also proposed a substantial increase in starting salaries for national civil servants, an indication that competition for staff is intensifying as the countryโ€™s chronic labor shortage persists. It proposed a 14.6% increase for incoming workers who graduated from universities, compared with a 6% increase for such workers the previous year.
