The Department of Defense is strengthening security capacity building in Pacific island nations to help them contain China as it ramps up its military expansion in the South Pacific.
The ministry this year began expanding the scope of assistance, which includes personnel development and technical cooperation, with support for police and other security authorities in countries that do not have armed forces.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is expected to announce the country’s plans to deepen security and defense cooperation with such island nations at the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting, to be held in Tokyo from July 16 to 18.
