Japan’s average minimum hourly wage is expected to rise by a record amount as the government tries to support households in the face of persistent inflation and boost economic growth with wage stimulus measures.
A committee charged with setting a target for the minimum wage has approved a nationwide average increase of ¥50, the fourth record increase in as many years.
Based on the target figure, each prefecture will decide how much to raise its local minimum wage later this year. The current national average is ¥1,004, meaning it will rise by about 5% to over ¥1,050.
