Since Japan was hit with an import ban on fishery products by China last year, the country has stepped up its efforts to explore new markets for the sale of scallops, the country’s main fishery product.
These efforts led to an increase in scallop exports to the United States and other markets, indicating that the scallop supply chain is shifting away from China.
The total value of Japan’s scallop exports has fallen as a result of China’s ban imposed on August 24, 2023, when the operator of the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant began discharging treated water containing small amounts of tritium into the ocean.
