KOCHI โ An observation deck has once again been set up next to a statue of Sakamoto Ryoma (1836-67) in Kochi, where tourists and other visitors can get an up-close look at the statue as well as beautiful views of the coastal landscape.
Born in Kochi, Sakamoto helped overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate and usher in a new era for Japan. He is one of Japan’s most popular historical figures.
The 13.5 meter tall statue in Katsurahama Park overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is a popular landmark in Kochi.
The city tourism association sets up an observation deck every spring and fall, and this is the 45th time. The initiative has been well received by visitors as they can enjoy the Pacific Ocean and picturesque scenery from the same eye level as the statue.
This time, the viewing area on the deck has been expanded, bringing it 4 feet closer to the statue than before. Visitors posed for photos in the same manner as the statue, while others looked at the ocean through binoculars.
โI am surprised by the beauty and power of the statue,โ said a 42-year-old woman from Yokohama.
Admission to the observation deck is ยฅ200. The deck will remain in place until June 2.
