Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike ultimately won a landslide victory in the capital’s gubernatorial election on Sunday, securing herself a third term. However, analysts expect changes in future elections, given the surprisingly strong performance of Shinji Ishimaru, who finished second.
The 71-year-old incumbent received nearly 3 million votes, or 42.8 percent of the total turnout, beating 55 other candidates in the race, the most candidates ever.
“The Children First policies that I have worked on so far, as well as the efforts to secure more human resources for nursing care as the population ages, which will become even more prominent next year, in 2025 โ these have been well received by many,” Koike told reporters at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building on Monday. “I feel that I have been given the responsibility to further fulfill these expectations.”
