The Liberal Democratic Party on Friday submitted a formal proposal to revise the law on the control of political funds to the House of Representatives, after talks with its junior coalition partner Komeito reached an impasse over the handling of political financing and related matters with the sale of tickets for fundraising parties.
While individual parties usually file pieces of legislation once they have secured the support of other parties in the assembly, a tight parliamentary schedule has pushed the LDP to speed up negotiations with the opposition, even at the cost of deepening the rift with its long-time ally .
With just over a month before the end of the current parliamentary session on June 23, the clock is ticking for political reform.
