Macron and Scholz are defeated by the far right in the EU elections

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz suffered massive defeats in Sunday’s European Parliament elections, as far-right parties made gains that could push the bloc to take a tougher stance on migration and ambitious protection moves could disrupt the environment.

Despite defeats at the national level, centre-left and centre-right parties across Europe will retain their majorities in the European Union-wide vote, which determines the composition of the bloc’s legislative assembly.

The European People’s Party of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was expected to finish first, winning 181 seats.
