Major tunnel unveiled to protect communications from disasters

KYOTOAug. 23 (News On Japan) – In preparation for Disaster Prevention Day on September 1, a huge underground tunnel was unveiled to the media on August 22. The tunnel is designed to protect communication cables from disasters.

Reporter Anna Yamaguchi: “This tunnel, deep beneath Osaka, connects Kyoto with Kobe.”

The tunnel, known as a “tลdล” (communications tunnel), was built by NTT West about 60 years ago. It serves to protect communications cables from potential disasters and was opened to the public especially in advance of Disaster Prevention Day.

The tunnel contains approximately 18 million communications cables for internet and telephone services, which run like a maze from Kyoto to Kobe.

The tunnel is also equipped with disaster prevention measures such as fire doors and drainage pumps. The tunnel reportedly survived the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake without damage.
