Kylian Mbappe removed his face mask but still looked a shadow of the player who shone at the past major international tournaments. However, the France captain was overshadowed by Lamine Yamal in Tuesday’s Euro 2024 semi-final against Spain.
Yamal stole the headlines by becoming the youngest goalscorer at a European Championship four days before his 17th birthday, and was the driving force behind Spain’s comeback by beating France 2-1.
Mbappé’s European Championship ended here and for the French captain and perhaps the best player in the world it was a disappointing tournament, with a broken nose, poor fitness and poor form to blame.
