New security clearance system brings Japan in line with other G7 countries

New Japanese legislation passed in May establishes a system of “security clearances” for access to classified information related to economic security, joining other G7 democracies.

Under the new law, individuals in the public and private sectors who are qualified to handle confidential information will receive government certification, making it easier for companies to participate in international research projects.

At the same time, challenges remain, such as protecting individuals’ privacy with regard to the background checks required for certification.
