Britain’s new trade secretary said on Tuesday he was optimistic that some trade barriers with the European Union can be lifted, but the mechanism to settle disputes will still need to be negotiated.
The Labour Party won the July 4 election on a pledge not to reopen key parts of Britain’s deal to leave the European Union, but is seeking a new deal on food and veterinary matters to reduce border controls on animal products.
Critics say this means the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) will have to accept oversight, a warning sign to Brexit activists who see it as an infringement on British sovereignty.
