Nippon Steel and peers urge Tokyo to curb steel imports from China

Nippon Steel and other Japanese steelmakers are asking Tokyo to consider curbing imports of cheap steel from China, the world’s largest steel producer, to protect the Japanese market, Nippon Steel Vice Chairman Takahiro Mori said in an interview.

As Nippon Steel tries to complete its acquisition of U.S. Steel, which is crucial to its global expansion, Mori, who is the lead negotiator for the deal, also said he had support from Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for the acquisition when they met in June, though he has not commented on the deal since becoming the Democratic vice presidential nominee.

China’s steel exports rose 24% to 53.4 million tonnes in the first half of 2024, representing an export of 100 million tonnes for the year.
