North Korea stops sending waste balloons across the border to the South

North Korea has said it will stop sending waste balloons across its border with South Korea, but has vowed to restart the practice if activists from the South resume flying anti-regime leaflets.

North Korean Vice Defense Minister Kim Kang Il said in a statement carried by state media that Pyongyang sent more than 3,500 balloons containing 15 tons of waste across the border from Tuesday to Sunday.

Kim said late on Sunday that the “unpleasant” measures had given the South Korean side a taste of “how much effort is needed” to clean up the waste, and said Pyongyang would “temporarily” halt its actions.
