The remains of a mining house, one of the largest in the Matsugasaki ruins of Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture, are seen on October 19.

HACHINOHE, Aomori – Remains of a 15-meter-high mining house were discovered at the Matsugasaki ruins, where a Jomon period settlement had been excavated, in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, the Korekawa Archaeological Institute announced on October 19.

Members of the institution have excavated the 80,000-square-foot site since fiscal year 2019, discovering approximately 200 construction remains. The newly discovered structure is the largest unearthed during this dig and one of the largest in the city.

According to the institution, the remains of the mine house, measuring approximately 15 meters wide and 5 meters long, were identified in September in the western part of the survey area. Traces of a hearth used for cooking and heating, as well as clay pots, were also discovered.

“It is a valuable discovery to help understand the lives of people in the Jomon period,” an institute official said.
