Oct 02 (NHK) – Panasonic has announced it will end production of fluorescent lamps by 2027 if an international ban comes into effect due to the health risks and environmental pollution caused by the mercury used in them.
The Japanese electronics giant says it will end production at the end of September 2027.
Panasonic began selling fluorescent lamps in 1951 and increased production as the Japanese economy enjoyed decades of high growth, but the increasing popularity of more energy-efficient LED lamps led to a gradual decline in production.
An international conference on the use of mercury decided last year to ban the production, export and import of fluorescent lamps containing the toxic element by 2027.
