NAHAApr 03 (News On Japan) – An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.7 struck near Taiwan on April 3 at 8:58 a.m., prompting tsunami warnings for the main island of Okinawa and the Miyako and Yaeyama regions, which were later canceled at 12:00 p.m. hours were lifted.
So far, tsunamis of 30 centimeters at 9:18 a.m. on Yonaguni Island and of 20 centimeters at 9:52 a.m. on Ishigaki Island have been observed.
In Miyakojima, tsunamis of 20 centimeters were recorded at 10:08 am and 30 centimeters at 10:50 am.
Regarding the damage caused by the earthquake, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi stated that information is still being collected and there have been no reports of damage so far.
In addition, authorities in Taiwan are reporting significant damage, including collapsed buildings in the city of Hualien.
Taiwanese authorities have issued tsunami warnings and called for vigilance.
