OSAKAJuly 24 (News On Japan) – Private school organizations in Osaka have asked Osaka Prefecture to publicize the existing system that allows students to attend special education programs for an additional fee, despite the ongoing initiative to make high school tuition free.
Starting this fiscal year, Osaka Prefecture has gradually implemented a policy of free high school tuition. Under this policy, the government will cover annual tuition up to 630,000 yen for both public and private schools, regardless of parentsโ income. Any amount exceeding this limit will be borne by the schools, resulting in zero tuition burden for parents.
The Osaka Association of Private High Schools has called on the prefecture to inform parents about the system, which allows for additional fees to be paid for education beyond the free tuition.
Yoko Kusajima, chairman of the Osaka Private Junior and Senior High School Association, said: “Data shows that nearly 85 percent of parents are willing to pay extra for value-added education. This indicates that there is a great demand for better education at private schools.”
Governor Yoshimura responded by saying that the prefecture would hold further discussions with private school organizations to consider their requests.
