KYOTO – Cultural properties not normally seen by the public can now be viewed by shrine and temple visitors during a seasonal event at 28 locations in Kyoto Prefecture.
The event, organized by the Kyoto Heritage Preservation Association, previously featured cultural properties mainly from shrines and temples in Kyoto city and surrounding areas. This year, however, the temples in Fukuchiyama, Ayabe and Maizuru, among others in the Oku-Kyoto area of the prefecture, are participating.
The special viewing schedule and entry fees vary depending on the shrine or temple.
At Daihoonji Temple in Kamigyo Ward, a set of six Kannon statues, designated as national treasures this year, six-panel folding screens of Kano Sanraku and other temple treasures are on public display until December 1.
The Chion-in Temple in the Higashiyama Ward will allow the public access to the upper part of the Sanmon Gate, which has been designated a national treasure, until November 10.
In the Oku-Kyoto area, visitors can view such cultural properties at several temples, including Kannonji Temple in Fukuchiyama, known as a “hydrangea temple in Tanba,” and Ayabe’s Komyoji Temple, said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku. .
