Historical issues continue to cast a shadow on relations between Tokyo and Seoul, even as ties have improved significantly since South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol came to power two years ago.
Yoon’s focus on rebuilding ties with Japan has helped relations rebound from what officials and experts say was the worst since the two countries normalized diplomatic ties in 1965.
โUnder the leadership of (Japanese) Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and President Yoon, dialogue and cooperation are expanding significantly in various areas, both qualitatively and quantitatively,โ Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said at a press conference on Thursday.
