Import prices of American beef have risen sharply in Japan, making it difficult for traders and catering establishments such as barbecue restaurants to purchase it.
The price increases are being driven by the recent sharp decline of the yen against the dollar, a reduced supply of beef from U.S. farmers and fierce competition for U.S. beef from countries such as South Korea and Mexico.
In search of cheaper foreign beef, related Japanese industries are intensifying efforts to diversify their sources of supply. Securing the necessary quantity, however, appears difficult. Normally reasonable prices are charged, but imported beef is now expected to be unaffordable for budget-conscious consumers in Japan.
