Russia, the world’s largest nuclear power, could shorten the decision-making time set out in official policy on the use of nuclear weapons if Moscow believes threats are increasing, the chairman of parliament’s defense committee said.
The war in Ukraine has led to the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, with President Vladimir Putin saying last month that Russia could change its official nuclear doctrine, which sets out the conditions under which such weapons can be used .
On Sunday, Andrei Kartapolov, the head of the defense committee of Russia’s lower house of parliament, was quoted by state news agency RIA as saying that if threats increased, the decision-making time for using such weapons could change.
