Sales of duty-free products in Japan grow, boosted by bags and jewelry

TOKYOAug 26 (News On Japan) – Duty-free sales at Japanese department stores in July have already surpassed last year’s total, driven by strong demand for luxury goods.

The Japan Department Stores Association said tax-free sales in the year to July totaled 397.8 billion yen, surpassing the previous annual record of 348.4 billion yen set last year.

The rising sales figures came mainly from luxury items such as bags, watches and jewelry, partly due to the depreciation of the yen.

Total sales in July, including domestic customers, reached 501.1 billion yen, marking the 29th consecutive month of growth. The association noted that summer clothing performed well, with not only discounted items but also regular-priced products selling well.
