Seven-Eleven joins pizza delivery service

TOKYOJul 5 (News On Japan) – Seven-Eleven, a major convenience store chain, has entered the pizza delivery market with a focus on delivering freshly baked pizzas. Seven-Eleven delivery staff, carrying large backpacks, are now delivering piping hot pizzas.

The new service offers two types of pizza: Margherita for 780 yen (tax included) and Teriyaki Chicken for 880 yen (tax included). Both are large enough for one to two people.

The service is currently being tested in about 30 stores in Tokyo and Kanagawa. Starting in August, it will be expanded to about 200 stores nationwide, including Hokkaido and Kyushu.

The fast delivery time is a major selling point. Daisuke Yui of Seven-Eleven Japan said: ‘Almost all items in the store can be delivered within 20 minutes, from 9:00 to 23:00’

Once an order is placed via the app, the pizza is baked directly in the store. The freshly baked pizza is then delivered to the customer by delivery people within 20 minutes.

This fast service is made possible by the fact that the transaction can be completed immediately upon ordering and the order can be delivered to the nearest Seven-Eleven store.

Regarding the high demands placed on this service, Yui explains: ‘Given our stock locations (stores) of more than 20,000, we see it as an advantage that we can deliver freshly baked, hot pizzas to places where this was previously not possible.’

Taichi Horibe, an expert in the restaurant and delivery industry, commented on the 20-minute delivery service: “Even for specialty pizza shops, the standard delivery time is usually 30 minutes. I think convenience stores can achieve shorter delivery times if they produce and deliver nearby.”
