Shizuoka will launch a registration system for Mount Fuji climbers in June

The Shizuoka Prefectural Government said on Wednesday it will launch an online registration system for Mount Fuji climbers on June 10.

Use of the registration system is not mandatory, but registration requires viewing a video on climbing rules and etiquette.

Mount Fuji straddles Shizuoka and neighboring Yamanashi Prefecture. Since the Yamanashi Prefectural Government has decided to implement a ¥2,000 fee for those who climb the mountain on the Yoshida Route in the prefecture, as well as a daily limit of 4,000 climbers, there are concerns that climbers will flock to the Shizuoka side will rush, covering the Fujinomiya, Gotenba and Subashiri routes.

Therefore, the Shizuoka government hopes that climbers will fully adhere to proper etiquette after watching the video. It is also considering introducing a regulation to collect fees from climbers in the next fiscal year, which starts in April 2025, or later.

The registration system allows climbers to register their names, schedules and mountain huts where they plan to stay. After watching the video, they will receive an email with a QR code. Checkpoints will be set up at the fifth station of each climbing route where climbers can show the QR code and then receive wristbands.

Overcrowding on Mount Fuji’s trails, as well as hasty climbing and ill-prepared climbers, have become problems due to a surge of visitors from abroad.
