South African opposition makes debut in Ramaphosa’s unity cabinet

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced his new cabinet. Ministerial posts are allocated to opposition politicians. At the same time, he retains his ally Enoch Godongwana as finance minister. This underlines the continuity in his economic policy.

The announcement of the new executive came after more than a week of negotiations that followed the African National Congress inviting its rivals to join a so-called unity government after it lost its parliamentary majority in the May 29 election. Nearly a dozen parties accepted the offer, agreeing to support Ramaphosa’s reappointment as president in exchange for other posts.

The new government is under pressure to address state incompetence, power shortages and logistical problems that have curtailed economic growth and investment and fueled already skyrocketing unemployment.
