South Africa’s African National Congress has begun talks with rivals to form a government after its worst election performance since Nelson Mandela brought the government to power after the end of apartheid in 1994.
The ANC won 159 of the 400 seats in the National Assembly in the May 29 elections, the election commission announced on Sunday. This is a steep drop from the 230 seats won by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s party five years ago.
The ANC’s drop to around 40% of the vote comes after years of economic mismanagement and corruption have left the country with one of the highest unemployment rates in the world and weak growth.
