Toshio Suzuki, producer of ‘The Boy and the Heron’, expresses his joy at winning an Oscar for the film at Studio Ghibli in Koganei, Tokyo, on Monday.

Paris (Jiji Press) – Japanese anime powerhouse Studio Ghibli Inc. will receive a palm of honor at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, it was announced on Wednesday.

“For the first time in our history, it is not a person but an institution that we want to celebrate,” Iris Knobloch, president of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Fremaux, general delegate, said in a statement.

During the festival, which will be held in France in May, the award will be presented for the long-term achievements of the studio, known for the films of director Hayao Miyazaki.

“I am truly honored and pleased that the studio has been awarded the Palm of Honor,” said Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki. “I would like to thank the Cannes Festival from the bottom of my heart. … I am confident that Studio Ghibli will continue to take on new challenges.”

The Festival de Cannes said that since its founding in 1985, Ghibli has “brought a breath of fresh air to animated films over the past forty years.”

The studio “achieved what seemed an impossible feat: independently producing pure masterpieces and conquering the mass market,” the statement said.
