Tax evasion scandal: cash hidden in the ceiling, TOKYOJune 21 (News On Japan) – Japan’s National Tax Administration announced that the amount of tax evasion uncovered across Japan last year in cases prosecuted by the Special Investigation Department known as ‘Marusa’ was approximately 8.9 billion yen.
Among the discoveries was a silver box hidden in a ceiling, containing more than 110 million yen in cash. This was just one of several tax evasion methods that the tax authorities uncovered.
According to the National Tax Authorities, 101 cases of tax evasion were prosecuted nationwide last year. A significant portion involved fraudulent withdrawals from tax offices due to abuse of the consumption tax reimbursement system. In addition, the agency highlighted cases orchestrated by so-called “tax evasion consultants” who supervised large-scale nationwide fraud.
Takashi Takamatsu, head of the National Tax Administration’s Special Investigation Department, noted: ‘With the proliferation of emails and social media, a wide range of traces are being left behind. The ability to accurately identify and capture evidence from large amounts of data has become critical.โ
In response to the challenges of the digital age and the enormous amount of evidence requiring analysis, the agency plans to improve its measures by developing new analytical tools and creating specialized departments.
