Extreme heat of more than 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) is expected across much of Japan on Sunday, from the Tohoku to Kyushu regions, with dangerously high temperatures expected to approach 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of the inland Kanto and Tokai regions.
Heatstroke warnings have been issued for 26 prefectures, including Tokyo, Gunma, Shizuoka, Fukui, Hyogo, Wakayama, Hiroshima, Ehime, Fukuoka and Kagoshima.
A high of 39 C was forecast for Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, as well as 38 C for both Chichibu in Saitama Prefecture and Kofu in Yamanashi Prefecture. Nagoya was expected to reach 37 C, along with the cities of Shizuoka and Saitama.
Temperatures in Kyoto and Yokohama were forecast to reach 36 degrees, while the city of Kagoshima would reach 35 degrees.
A record 162 locations experienced extreme heat on Friday, according to the Meteorological Agency’s Automated Meteorological Data Acquisition System. That figure was expected to be exceeded again on Sunday, with more than 200 locations nationwide experiencing extreme heat, the Japan Weather Association said.
