The far right appears to be the winner of the just-held European Parliament elections.
While the conservative center continues to control the European Union’s institutions, a wave of support among the more extreme elements of the right is raising alarm bells. Populism is on the rise in Europe โ as elsewhere in the world โ and leaders are struggling to find ways to dampen its impact.
For much of the world, the results will have limited impact. There appears to be increasing fatigue from the war in Ukraine, but there are no indications that people are willing to give up the fight. There is also no evidence that China is willing to expand its influence. Europe will continue to resist Beijing’s pressure and predation. Japan should welcome either outcome.
