When the calendar turned to July, banzuke The Japan Sumo Association (JSA) has released the rankings for the final tournament in Nagoya at the Dolphins Arena (also known as the Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium). One name in particular stands out.
With the event moving to the IG Arena in July next year, sumo in central Japan will not only have a new venue from 2025, but one with a capacity larger than Tokyo’s Kokugikan.
By the time the next tournament takes place in Nagoya in the huge new 17,000-seat stadium (12,000 for sumo), the sport’s top rankings could look very different too.
