The Swiss Nemo wins the Eurovision Song Contest

Switzerland’s Nemo won the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday, becoming the first artist who identifies as non-binary to claim victory, in a competition marked by controversy over Israel’s participation during the Gaza war.

Twenty-four-year-old Nemo’s “The Code” won the highest score from the national juries, and enough of the popular votes to reach 591 points, leaving Croatia behind in the final, held in Malmö, Sweden.

“I hope this competition can fulfill its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person in this world,” Nemo said through tears as he accepted the trophy.
