The world’s largest octopus captured on film

HOKKAIDO14th of June (News about Japan) – In the waters off Rausu, Hokkaido, at a depth of about 25 meters, a huge creature was discovered, writhing and undulating.

The photographer, who felt a sense of fear due to the size of the creature, shared his experience.

Tomoyuki Yamamoto, the head of Asahi Shimbun’s Nemuro Bureau, who captured the footage, said: โ€œIt looked like a rock. There are places on the sandy seabed of Rausu with many rocks. That huge rock didn’t move.’

Yamamoto continued, โ€œUpon closer inspection, there were suction cups and eyes. Oh! It’s an octopus.’

The creature turned out to be a giant Pacific octopus (mizudako).

This species is said to be the largest in the world, with an arm span of about 3 meters. Each arm of the mizudako has 250 to 300 suction cups, each with a diameter of about 10 centimeters.

Yamamoto explains: ‘The suction cups are always clean and smooth and are maintained to ensure strong adhesion. The force is enormous, so if the octopus attaches to you, you will have to rely on your diving partner to help you. It’s hard to do anything alone.’

Due to the powerful suction, caution should be used when approaching a mizudako compared to a regular octopus.
